Trade union leaders call off tomorow's general strike ! -clear their clogged minds to think sanely and sensibly

(Lanka-e-News -14.Dec.2015, 11.30PM) The Islandwide strike (the general strike) that was to be staged tomorrow by the State , semi government and private sectors jointly has been supended , the joint convenor Saman Rathnapriya addressing a media briefing today (14) in Colombo revealed .This media conference was attended by representatives of more than 130 trade unions.

K.D.Lalkantha the president of the national tade union headquarters  of the JVP said at a different venue that the strike planned  for tomorrow will be  suspended.

Rathnapriya at his  media briefing stated , a written document of the special speech made by the prime minister (P.M) in parliament has been received by him , and the strike has been called off.

In any event the united postal trade union front  and Ceylon bank employees union which also belong to the joint trade unions did not participate in the conference. The postal trade union front had announced that it is not concurring in the special announcement made by the P.M. Nevertheless , they are not taking part in tomorrow’s  strike.

The Ceylon bank employees’ union has not planned  to halt its strike for tomorrow, it is learnt .Hence ,  the Bank employees’ trade unions which are not staging the strike have  obtained an injunction order from court .That injunction order issued by the District court states that the bank employees who are not taking part in the strike tomorrow shall not be obstructed or hindered.

Earlier on , in the morning itself , Gemunu Wijeratne declared that his private buses will not be participating in the strike tomorrow , and withdrew from the proposed joint trade union action.

This morning , Wimal Dheerasekera the  political analyst of Lanka e news revealed , ‘a  General strike is the final struggle of the working class against an anti national cruel government ,whereas this  government has not even completed three months . Therefore , these leaders of trade unions must think , if they are going to use this workers’ ultimate weapon at once , what is the weapon they are going to wield in their final struggle? In such an event , after using the multi barrel gun , in the final struggle it will only be a catapult  that will remain for use, if the enemy is not weakened.’

Lanka e news had always supported hitherto the just struggles in the country , but in this struggle , it refrained from it because the demands were unreasonable . The calling off of the strike  however is a matter for   appreciation because ,  at least the trade union leaders at the final moment opened their eyes and cleared their clogged minds to think sanely ,sensibly and wisely .
