(Lanka-e-News -09.Nov.2015, 9.30PM) Sri Lankan community leader, an honest patriot and right activist Sanath de Silva passed away after battling with long time illness on Friday.
Sanath de Silva lived in the United States for four decades and he was well known as unofficial Sri Lankan ambassador to the greater Washington area because his distinguish service to Sri Lankan community.
During the final stages of the war against LTTE, he fearlessly stood against the strong pro LTTE diaspora in the Northern America.
He had rare excess to power corridors in the State Department as a Sri Lankan community leader. Sanath de Silva had been successfully lobbying US Senators and Congressmen during wartime. He led several protests against LTTE activities in the Capital Hill during that time.
Sanath de Silva led the “Free General Fonseka” campaign in the North America, which influenced the US State Department to pressure Rajapakasha government to release General Fonseka.
He was a distinguish old boy of the Ananda College and his famous classmates are Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka and Basil Rajapaksha.
His long time friend Field Marshal Fonseka issued a statement yesterday, which stated that Sanath was a great patriot with a fighting spirit who never stopped working to help see a better tomorrow for his country. He further stated, “It is with deep sadness I write this note regarding the passing away of my dear friend Sanath de Silva. He was a remarkable person who stood by all his friends, including my family, through the hardest years of our lives, and me never fearing to put his life and reputation on the line. He was a great patriot with a fighting spirit who never stopped working to help see a better tomorrow for his country. I and my family will truly miss his friendship and enduring spirit”.
Sanath de Silva’s remains at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd W,Siiver Spriing, The Viewing is scheduled on 11th Wednesday from 3pm to 8 pm Eastern time.
