(Lanka-e-News -08.Nov..2015, 6.30 PM) We announce with deep sorrow that Kotte Naga Vihara chief prelate most venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera who spearheaded the victorious campaign to restore Democracy in the country by dethroning the Rajapakse regime passed away today at dawn about 4.30 am at the Singapore Mount Elizabeth hospital .
The 73 years old most ven. Thera was ailing from hypertension (high blood presure) and diabetes for a long time . Lately with his condition turning for the worse , a by pass operation too had to be performed on him in Sri Lanka.Any patient suffering from hypertension and diabetes runs grave risks when surgery is performed on him . The operation performed on the most Ven. Thera lasted nearly 9 hours. Following the surgery , because he contracted pneumonia , for further treatment he was taken to Singapore Mount Elizabeth hospital where he was admitted.
Yesterday , the Ven. Thera’s sickness took a turn for the worse. At Kotte Naga vihara yesterday night , a Bodhi pooja pinkama was conducted for the Ven. Thera to invoke blessings on him.This religious event was attended by a large crowd including president Maithripala Sirisena. Finally at about 4.30 this early morning the most venerable Thera breathed his last leaving a void that is difficult if not impossible to fill .
The most Ven Thera best noted for his honesty , integrity and sincerity of purpose always ,was the leader of the movement for just society .The fundamental aim of this campaign was abolition of the obnoxious executive presidency. On 8th January 2015 , this struggle could not accomplish its goal. President Maithripala Sirisena who came to power on the promise that this executive presidency will be ablolished did not fully honor his undertaking.
In the circumstances , the best honor and respect that can be bestowed on this great being who is no more among us is : when the new constitution is coming into being to ensure the abolition of the executive presidency which was the cherished goal of the most Ven. Sobitha Thera
May the most Ven. Thera attain Nibbana !
