(Lanka-e-News -01.Nov.2015, 11.30PM) The LTTE suspects who are now in prison can be released on November 10 th , the Deepavali day , if there are no cases against them , said minister in charge of law and order , and prison reforms , Thilak Marapone expressing his belief.
The minister attending the inaugural function of the renovated Jaffna prison went on to comment on the controversial issues affecting the implementation of laws and the prison system . Though there are 18000 prisoners in the prisons in Sri Lanka (SL) , many of them ought not be in prison, he added.
These prisoners are incarcerated on trifling wrongs ,or because they could not secure legal advice. Hence , this present system of imprisonment should be specially focused, the minister pinpointed.
Under the existing methodologies , the police are taking a long time to file cases against the suspects , and it takes 10 to 15 years to complete a trial. Consequently , the suspect , the lawyers and the judges are driven to the point of absolute disgust . This is a ridiculous and ludicrous situation , and therefore a new system must be introduced , minister Marapone observed.
