(Lanka-e-News- 08.Oct.2015, 4.30PM) In the case in which two women fell victims to rape in Vishwamaduwa, Mulaitivu , the suspects – 4 army officers were sentenced to 25 years in jail by the Jaffna high court judge on the 7 th.
Charges were filed against the four members of the army of committing rape on 2010 -06-06 on the two victims living in a hovel, but before the four suspects could be arrrested , one of them fled ,and even on the date of delivery of verdict ,the police were unsuccessful in their efforts to arrest that suspect.
According to the judgment delivered , in addition a sum of Rs. 500,0000.00 as compensation is payable to one victim and a sum of Rs. 100,000.00 to the other victim . In the event of default , a further five years jail sentence was imposed on each of the accused .
The high court judge while delivering the verdict lamented , if such an incident is to take place after the war is concluded , it means that the army had not been able to protect the ordinary citizens , and is a mark of disgrace to the entire army.
The judge commenting further noted, the two victims who were able to safeguard their modesty during the war ,being raped using force is a clear index that a grave injustice has been committed on them.
Moreover all the charges against the accused have been proved beyond doubt necessitating him to deliver this sentence, the judge concluded.
