Court grants permission to CID to investigate Girithale army camp where Prageeth Ekneliyagoda was tortured

(Lanka-e-News -05.Oct.2015, 9.30PM) In the abduction and murder of journalist Prageeth Ekneliyagoda , the Homgama magistrate R.B. Nelumdeniya gave permission to the CID to take photographs of the Girithale army intelligence armed force  division camp where the victim was detained , as well as to examine the registers and books   that were maintained there. The army commander was also given instructions to provide necessary facilities and miltary police security to the CID officers during their investigations at the camp.

The investigation into this murder was launched following a complaint lodged with the CID by Prageeth’s wife.Based on these investigations, a group of army intelligence division officers including two Lieutenant Colonels have been taken into custody by the CID so far, and are being interrogated.

The progress report on the further investigations was submitted to court by the CID.

Dileep Peiris , lawyer who appeared for the prosecution with the CID requested court to grant permission  to the CID to inspect , take photographs and do a search at  the Girithale army intelligence force division camp because investigations have revealed that Prageeth was detained at that camp.

On the 27 th of August 2009,the army intelligence has tape recorded a discussion that was held with Prageeth on a land belonging to Prageeth at Sigiriya , and that tape was given over the following day to the Director intelligence division ,the lawyer told court. Hence , it has become necessary to investigate the registers that were given over to the Director intelligence, the mobile phones of the intelligence division officers and the registers thereof , the lawyer pointed out while  requesting  court to give an order to make available all the  relevant information to the CID.

The lawyer also revealed to court , the register that records the exit and re entry of officers going on leave via  the camp’s main gate ;the register that records entry and exit of vehicles ; and the register that records the granting of permission to vehicles to travel  a distance of over 20 kilometers from the camp are necessary for further investigation . Moreover , the register which has records of meal expenses pertaining  to  the main officers of the camp, and the relevant officers are needed for investigation, and therefore the lawyer requested court  to give a directive to provide all this information.

The magistrate after weighing the pros and cons of the  request of the prosecution gave the permission requested . The magistrate also granted permission to the CID officers including ASP Shani Abeysekera to visit the Girithale army intelligence armed force camp and conduct investigations, and collect the necessary registers .
