Mannar mass burial digging resumed ; an abandoned well discovered

(Lanka-e-News- 30.Aug.2015, 12.25PM) The second stage of the exhumation of bodies in the mass burial at Manthai , Mannar near the Thirukedheeswaram Kovil began 28th evening before Mannar magistrate A.T. Alexiraja and under his supervision.

On 20 th  December 2013 when a group of laborers were digging the A32 road where there was a water supply route , human skeletal remains were detected . Following this discovery , the digging for human skeletal remains was carried out on the orders of  Mannar Magistrate at that time , Ms. Anandi Kanagaratnam.  It was later discovered there were skeletal remains supposedly  belonging to 84 human dead bodies at that spot.

During that period , assist. Director of the acrheological department , Namal Kodituwakku , a shameless  lapdog and bootlicker of Rajapakse regime , said , those remains are as old as 50 to 60 years , and some are even as old as over 100 years.Kodituwakku despite being an Archeological expert (or so he posed off ) , made these revelations like a light foreteller and not like an archeologist . He even went on to say without conducting any investigation duly that during the ancient period the residents did not have the practice of burying dead persons in coffins  ,and in the period 1936 -1937 , malaria  disease was widespread in the plantation zone , and that he suspected these are bodies of those victims who died .

Thereafter , this issue  of mass burial was dismissed most irresponsibly and   the investigations were suppressed. However with the advent of the new government this mass burial is being investigated. An abandoned  well near the first mass burial is now being dug.
