Ekneligoda brutal murder :Two army intelligence division officers arrested after nearly five years !

(Lanka-e-News- 08.July.2015, 4.30PM) Following the investigations initiated by the CID  in regard to the murder of Lanka e news journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda who was abducted at Rajagiriya on 24 th Jnauary 2010, two army intelligence division officers have been taken into custody. These two suspects are Tamil intelligence officers, and they are in the process of making confessions pertiaining to the abduction and murder of Prageeth. Based on those revelations , a group of army officers are to be arrested shortly.

Hereunder is some information that can be revealed of the discoveries made which would  not impede the on going  investigations :

These two suspects after abducting Prageeth have handed him over to the Girithale army camp. After the abduction  of Prageeth in the night,  the following day , the individual who came to abduct him had taken a call at about 2.00 p.m. via phone No. 0770 375704 which has been recorded by the Dialog tower , Girithale . The Lanka e news editor , on the same day informed police giving  all these details , but the police took no action.

Again on the same day, a complaint  was made to IP Janaka of the Mirihana police station, yet no investigation was initiated. However, based on the current investigations conducted by the CID , it has been confirmed that Prageeth was abducted and handed over to the Girithale army camp . If only the police had acted duly on the day the first complaint was made , the life of Prageeth could possibly have  been saved.

About 20 Tamil intelligence officers are attached to the Girithale army camp, although two officers only have carried out the abduction. All of them had been provided with Dialog phones , and those phones were not registered according to the IMI numbers therein. Who imported them and who are the owners are also not registered. All these phones have been used for the purposes of abduction and murders on the orders of Gotabaya Rajapakse.

It is learnt that the two abductors of Prageeth had links with a famous song lyricist of Galle Fort with whom Prageeth fell  out . This song lyricist is a very staunch  pro MaRa supporter. During that period , Prageeth who was extending support to Sarath Fonseka at the presidential elections has given a  CD casette of poems in support of Fonseka to the lyricist at his home in Galle Fort.

The lyricist who flew into a rage , exclaimed  ‘ Ekneligodas  betrayed Kings then , and you are betraying the King now.’ One of his children had then threatened and said, he  had handed  over the aforesaid CD casette  to the office of Rajapakse located in Galle, and has ensured Ekneligoda is  apprehended.

The investigations are now on to ascertain what connections those who  abducted had in whose possession the  phone of the lyricist was .

Prageeth’s wife’s first complaint was made to the Homagama police. The CID that inspected the information books and the phone registers at Homagama police , discovered two leaves which contained details of the phone messages regarding the abduction had been torn out  and removed.Investigations have unearthed   information that the Homagama police inspector Fernando who inquired into Ekneliyagoda disappearance had committed a most serious crime by taking the aforementioned telephone  register  away  and bringing  it back secretly after tearing off the two leaves.

After Prageeth was handed over to Girithale army camp , it is with the knowledge of the chiefs there he was murdered. His body was then drowned in the eastern  sea and destroyed so that nothing can be traced.

In regard to Prageeth’s disappearance though two CID investigations were commenced during the Rajapakse era , the ex defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse had ordered that those investigations be terminated while the investigations were under way. Now , when the investigations were resumed under the new government , no support whatsoever was received in that direction from the high rung officers of the defense ministry or the army.

The CID had to most secretly and strategically conduct its investigation which led to the arrest of the two suspects (army intelligence division officers) aforenoted.

It is learnt that , now , Colonel Kumara of Trincomalee army camp has visited the homes of the two arrested officers and is arranging  to file a petition against the arrests in the Human rights commission.

It is well to recall that a huge storm of protests  was triggered locally and internationally following the abduction of Prageeth Ekneligoda . Tremendous pressures were also brought to bear on the government of Mahinda Rajapakse  (most notorious for abductions and murders ) at that time  to conduct a transparent fair investigation and apprehend the culprits. The current CID arrests are a milestone reached in the investigations amidst almost insuperable odds
