Bloemendhal shooting: attempt on Ravi’s life confirmed-police without dillydallying and light foretelling must act fast- analysts

(Lanka-e-News- 02.Aug.2015, 3.45PM) In the brutal shooting incident in which one person  was shot dead in cold blood in broad daylight and 13 others were injured at Bloemendhal road , when  some supporters of ex minister Ravi Karunanayake were walking along with him were fired at with  a spray of bullets , even though 24 hours have elapsed since this tragedy occurred , regrettably no suspect has been arrested by the police so far , and police investigations have also not shown any progress that can make the rudely shocked and concerned law abiding citizens of the country to feel happy.

While the police themselves are trying to camouflage this cold blooded murder of innocent civilians by claiming  it is a result of a clash between two underworld gangs , the police media spokesman on the contrary had not officially stated anything to that effect.

The IGP has entrusted the investigation to the CID, and this morning the IGP and the CID officers conducting the investigation held a discussion , police media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera  revealed. The media spokesman said , the investigation is being conducted along two lines : whether political groups  are linked to this attack? Or whether underworld gangs are involved?

In a vehicle that was found in the Bloemendhal housing complex yesterday,  there was a T 56 magazine and 20 unused  bullets of T56 weapons. But so far it is not confirmed that this was the vehicle in which the assassins  arrived to launch the attack.

When Lanka e news inquired from the police media spokesman whether the T 56 bullet found at the scene of the crime and that was in the vehicle had the same serial numbers ? he said , that cannot be determined.

The owner of the vehicle had been arrested .He had been in Anuradhapura on a tour , and he is being questioned on whether the vehicle was given by him on hire to anyone , the police media spokesman revealed.

When lanka e news asked the media spokesman , about the news reports being spread by the pro Rajapakse regime lackeys  and their media that two underworld members Army Sampath and Sanka who  were targeted in the shooting  were in the group that was with Ravi Karunanayake , and they  have gone missing having  fled after getting shot, the police media spokesman replied , there is nothing to confirm that story.

He also added that there are a large number of  eye witnesses to this brutal shooting , and their statements are being recorded , but none  of them had stated there  was army Sampath or  Sanka .Answering the query raised by Lanka e news whether such individuals had sustained injuries and are hospitalized , the media spokesman said , there are no such reports .

In any event , the police media spokesman said , the supporters of Ravi Karunanayake had violated election laws, which allows only 25  people to go on house to house canvassing , and they cannot go in procession on the main road.

The election laws clearly stipulate only religious or social groups can go in processions , but at yesterday’s canvassing campaign  there were over 300 participants. However law is not going to be enforced against the people who were shot at which would be like a fallen man being gored by the bull , the media spokesman noted.

Meanwhile Ms. Nadheera ,the media secretary  for Ravi Karunanayake informed that from the moment canvassing was begun yesterday , their media division had recorded the proceedings via video and have also photographed them. The police that came and examined all those recordings did not say there were underworld members , she pinpointed.

During the elections period large number of people come forward to extend support to the minister , and everyone is not known personally. But in the videotapes forwarded to the police if there were underworld members , the police ought to have identified them, for underworld members are known to the police and not to them . Nevertheless police had not stated there were underworld members among the crowd, Nadheera revealed to Lanka e news.

The black vehicle that was trailing  from earlier on was identified by the police based on the video tapes forwarded to the police , she further observed.

When Lanka e news inquired from a retired analyst on cirminal investigation in Sri Lanka (SL) , he related a different story : based on the modus operandi  of the country’s  underworld criminals , when they want to attack they target their victims accurately , and do not just attack at random.

And if the targeted individual or individuals are in a crowd , what they do is , not indiscriminately shooting down , but bombing that place , and completely obliterating all clues of the target.

Hence , when such a thing has not taken place in this tragedy , to assume it is an underworld operation is erroneous , the analyst opined. He also added pointing out an accusing finger at Rajapakses without evidence is also incorrect. Every criminal uses this as an opportunity because he  knows in these situations the accusing finger is pointed at Rajapakses( most notorious  for murders and crimes ), and he can exploit that to escape , the retired analyst elaborated.

No matter what , it is absolutely clear by now that this was an attack targeting Ravi Karunanayake. Therefore the police instead of dilly dallying , and wasting time on ‘light foretelling’ , must put the  foot down and conduct an expeditious accurate investigation , for this daring daylight shooting is an index that the security situation in the country is at a most dangerously  low ebb, the analyst said with concern.
