IRC in UPFA list: John to file writ application

(Lanka-e-News-24.July.2015, 10.00PM) The United National Party will file a writ application in the High Court or Supreme Court seeking an order to annul the candidates' list of the UPFA candidates for Gampaha district as it includes an Island Reconvicted Criminal (IRC).

According to Public Order and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga, the lawyers have advised him as the Gampaha district leader of the UNP group of candidates to seek a court order cancelling the entire list of UPFA candidates.

Amaratunga insisted that he raised objections against the candidacy of Thilak Waragoda who is in the 21st place of the UPFA candidates' list.

He requested the people not to support the UPFA at the election as this list of candidates is to be annulled by court and all candidates in the UNP list will be able to enter Parliament without hassle. The minister said UPFA candidates contesting the upcoming election from the Gampaha district should not waste their money and time in vain.

"He has been convicted and imprisoned for several times for committing criminal activities and the police still brand him as an IRC," Amaratunga said.

The minister said they are in the process of obtaining documents with regard to this criminal. There are number of candidates who are in the IRC category.

"An action has been filed against Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga for an alleged fraud. He was on the verge of being arrested by the FCID," Amaratunga said.

The minister said he has information that details of the alleged transaction of the Chief Minister has been upheld by investigators.

"The transactions were reportedly carried out through cheques," he said.

Amaratunga said investigations into the Western Province Chief Minister will continue after the election.

He said the list of UPFA candidates for the Gampaha district consists of a notorious drug baron whom when caught red handed by the Special Task Force, the head of the country went to his house to console him.
