(Lanka-e-News- 08.Feb.2015, 11.00PM) Following the victory at the Presidential elections on the 8 th of January , Maithripala Sirisena was elected by the people as President of the country by a majority of over 400,000 votes , and based on the promise given by him to the nation , he under the 100 days interim program , appointed the ministers of his new government for good governance. Ironically however ,just within 25 days of his government taking over the reins , 114 members of his own SLFP party of which he is the leader had handed over a no confidence motion against John Amaratunge , a minister appointed by Maithripala himself. This motion was handed over to the speaker last evening (07) at about 3.30 p.m.
The crucial question in this perplexing political imbroglio is : who is responsible for this and why ?
The present representation in parliament is as follows :
Opposition UNP MPs - 67
Opposition MPs that is in the majority – 157 of which 3 are JVP MP’s .
Ajith Kumara independent group MP (JVP split faction )-1
MPs of TNA who joined with Piyasena – 14
Accordingly , the UPFA has 127 members only.
The 114 members who signed the no confidence motion constituting more than half the total number of parliament representatives , are the SLFP MPs of a total of 127 .
Will the no confidence motion be included in the agenda following the normal procedure and be taken for debate on the first day itself ?
Or will the government decide whether it shall be postponed indefinitely ? The answer for this has to be decided by the government . On the other hand if the interim government decides to dissolve parliament without taking up the no confidence motion , then its 100 day interim program will be baulked ,and held up until the parliament meets next .
In any event , if this no confidence motion has been tabled only to demonstrate the strength of the opposition , it can be postponed sans fixing a date without including it in the agenda .
Meanwhile , a group sought to impede the efforts of the new government which under its good governance 100 days program is primarily aiming at abolishing the executive Presidency powers , and to empower the independent commissions. To the consternation of this reactionary group however , their court action bore no fruits and they had to return empty handed .
At the same time the 6.2 million people constituting the majority who elected the government for good governance , and are having great expectations that their dreams will be fulfilled , after the defeat of the diabolic , despotic, diddling Rajapakses, are surely not going to watch idle and be passive spectators if the double faced, double tongued group of 114 masqueraders is once again seeking under the guise of a no confidence motion to permit the discarded Rajapakses to rear their filthy heads again from the garbage bins they have been consigned to by the people mounting Himalayan obstacles.
