‘A new morning to motherland’; a new government under Mahinda as P.M.? Flower Bud and SLFP poll 57. 3% and win..

(Lanka-e-News - 11.Feb.2018, 11.45AM) Though the Elections Commission had still not officially announced the local government election results , based on the results released Island wide , the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP ) under the flower bud symbol had secured 49.2% of the votes cast and had won with  a clear majority . The official organizer for the flower bud party was Basil Rajapakse , and its unofficial leader was Mahinda Rajapakse.

The percentage  of votes polled by the UNP Island wide is 31. 2 % . The JVP polled 6.9 % and Maithri group polled 8.1 %. The Tamil and Muslim parties as well as the minor groups together polled a percentage of 4.6 of the total . (The final unofficial result of the districts in percentage is appended and  can be viewed by magnification)

The UNP won in Colombo , Kurunegala ,  Matale, Nuwara Eliya ,Hatton , Hambantota , Badulla, Wattala, Negombo , Kolonnawa, Panadura (  11 Municipal Councils) , and three   pradeshya sabahs , namely , Badulla, Kuliyapitiya and Passara , according to unofficial reports.

Maithripala Sirisena’s SLFP had won 5 local bodies , and is  in the third place on the Island-wide polling. There had never been an election in this whole solar system in which a ruling president faced such monumental humiliation .

One example of the government’s crushing   defeat was at the Galle district local body election. 237 of the 255 members (total) elected were from the Flower bud , while the UNP secured only 17 seats. All of them are from the proportional representation list .At Kaduwela the UNP could only win in one division while all others had been won by the Flower Bud.

Following this political upheaval , the people’s mandate in favor of the president and the Prime minister of the UNP is invalidated . However under the constitution , the government cannot be dissolved within the next two and half years , it cannot   go for elections.  In any event , under the Democratic system, the present government   has no moral right to continue with its governance without a  people’s mandate.

In the circumstances , the ruling UNP party has decided to appoint Mahinda Rajapakse as the prime minister (P.M.) of the group which received the people’s mandate , and permit the reign to be continued for the remaining period. Meanwhile the Mahinda Rajapakse faction has agreed to appoint Mahinda as P.M. under the presidency of Maithripala Sirisena , and carry on the government.  Basil Rajapakse has officially informed president in this regard , based on reports reaching Lanka e news.

It is learnt Basil and the party president G.L Peiris have met Wijedasa Rajapakse who was axed by the UNP , and invited him to come in as a minister . But Wijedasa has declined the offer.

Double faced Mangala Samaraweera who wore  a double mask and was playing a cunning ‘double game’ getting the best from both sides during the last election , had informed the president he cannot accept the P.M. post amidst this defeat. In any case , none from the Flower Bud party had made a request to the president to appoint Mangala  as the P.M.

Mahinda who had made a comment in the face book titled ‘ a new morning to the motherland’  spoke thus :

''This mandate has underlined   Sri Lankans must get together for Sri Lankans . This victory at this election of Podu Jana Peramuna is a confirmation that the people are against the corrupt government and are ready to re build this country .My profuse thanks to all those who committed themselves and contributed to this victory . I request you to celebrate this victory most peacefully.’'.

A second row group of leaders of the UNP speaking to Lanka e News said , they thank Ranil Wickremesinghe for all the services he rendered to the party , but now the time has come for him to hand over the leadership of the party to another and honorably divest himself of the responsibilities.
