-President promises to civil organization leaders
(Lanka-e-News- 14.Sep.2016, 11.30PM) After holding discussions with the Prime Minister (P.M.) there shall be a cabinet reshuffle to rid the Cabinet of corrupt and inefficient ministers , and steps will be taken to establish a special court to uninterruptedly and without delay hear cases of frauds and corruption that were committed during the past, in the same way as Duminda Silva’s case was heard , said president Maithripala Sirisena on the 13 th night amidst a loud round of applause from the leaders of 48 civil organizations.
The president gave this assurance on 13 th night when he gave a dinner at Presidential place , Fort to the people’s representatives of the 48 civil organizations which signed a pact earlier on with Maithripala Sirisena when he was the common candidate to install him as the president of the country.
The cordial function was to commence at 8.00 p.m. was delayed until about 9.00 p.m. because the president returned late after attending a book presentation ceremony.
Professor Sarath Wijesuriya addressing the most friendly gathering said , ‘ None of us have personal agendas to fulfill ’
The professor after reading a message containing the requests the leaders of the Civil organizations are expecting to be complied with by the president was presented to the president. The message requested the president to reshuffle the cabinet by rooting out corrupt and inefficient ministers ,and to establish a special court to hear cases pertaining to corruption and frauds committed in the past so that those could be heard without interruption in the same way as Duminda’s case.
(The full content of the message shall be revealed via another report later).
The president then revealed he would discuss in detail with the P.M.in this connection , and will unhesitatingly move ahead on this matter ,amidst loud applause .
Though the representatives of the Civil Organizations could not be met frequently , he has not forgotten the commitment , sacrifices and the challenges they faced to appoint him as the president , and will not any day be expunged from his memory , the president asserted. In an emergency , they need not keep an appointment , and he can be met at his residence at Paget Road at about 8.30 in the morning . ‘But, all of you don’t come on the same day ,’ the president said with a smile.
The president at the commencement of his speech said, as the 6 th president of the country , unlike his predecessors , he faced most distinct challenges , issues and obstacles during the period of one year 8 months he had been in power , while adding , the earlier presidents had to grapple with issues and challenges which were much less during the initial 1-2 years. While the UPFA had 2 /3 majority in Parliament , the appointment of a P.M. from the UNP which had 47 seats led to new challenges , he recalled. Yet the 19 th amendment could be passed with the consent of all . Such an achievement , nobody else could accomplish in the past , he reminded .
Subsequently by granting instantaneous relief to the people the budget was passed with a two third majority . Though it was mentioned or not in the mandate at the August 17 th elections of a consensual government , since the people did not grant an absolute majority to any party , a consensual government had to be formed , and he therefore went ahead with it , he explained.
In any event ,everything relating to the affairs of the government are not salutary , and there are unwelcome matters , about which he does not wish to elaborate , the president went on to remark.
If everything can be done within 24 hours , he would certainly do , but those cannot be done that easily. However he will work with commitment to do surely even if slowly after taking into consideration the economic , political and international aspects , the president noted. Many of them who are critical do not know that , he added.
‘I do not say I am right on every occasion. Nobody in the world is entirely without blemish.’ When the president stated this in all humility , in a manner no other previous leader of the country had ever spoken , the leaders of the civil organizations began admiring and speaking about his humility and candidness. They discussed among themselves all the leaders before him when they were in power were braggarts, only boasting about their so called ‘great concepts and thoughts.’
At the conclusion of the president’s speech , the secretary of the movement for Just society handed over the message to the president.
