‘We shall remain as drunkards cum Pilots - Pilots Guild: Work to rule if you obstruct us !!

(Lanka-e-News -10.Sep.2016, 11.45PM) A media briefing was held Friday(09) which revolved around doubts that  have proliferated lately regarding the irresponsible drunken  pilots of Sri Lanka. It is being seriously questioned whether the Sri Lankan pilots of the Pilots Guild are truly Pilots or ‘Pol Pilots ?’

Pardon us for describing them as ‘Pol Pilots’ . Pilots of planes are those who fly the planes and take off from the ground. Pol Pilots (Cocount tree climbers) are those who also take off from the ground when they climb trees to pluck pol (coconuts) but after a ‘shot’ (Pol toddy) . When pilots of planes are drunk unlike the drunken coconut tree climbers, it is common knowledge  they can court the worst disaster to countless lives and the country .

When Captain Upendra Ranaweera a pilot of Sri Lankan (SL) Airlines arrived to take over duties as pilot of the plane , following a complaint made by his assistant pilot about Upendra’s inebriated condition ( putting the lives of passengers in jeopardy) , the plane with 259 passengers and a 14 member crew had to be delayed for 15 hours . Consequently , the plane had to be stationed and flight delayed at the Frankfurt Airport  , Germany recently.

After this disgraceful incident , the SL Airlines Co. has introduced a scheme to ascertain whether the pilot is under the influence of liquor before he takes over the plane. In truth this measure should be taken by the Airlines more in the interest of the safety of the passengers than its own. The issues should arise when an Airline does not take such precautionary measures.

Unfortunately ,as is customary in SL , everything that is done in the best interests of the nation is interpreted wrong by the ‘white collar professionals’ and there is a  section of such bigoted snobbish toffee nosed morons in every profession  who resist salutary proposals. Two members of the Pilots Guild who  convened a media briefing yesterday , said , until the Airlines Co. withdraws this proposed condition  , they will be staging a ‘work to rule’

In other words what these toffee nosed morons are demanding is : ‘ allow us to pilot the planes while we are under the influence of liquor.’  What a weird request !

As far as we are aware  , pilots being of the essential services cannot engage in work to rule.

Pilots cannot stage ‘work to rule’ .However  the Pol pilots who cannot read a word , not only are able to  ‘work to rule ‘ but even able to  teach the rule after a ‘shot’ to the drunkards and drunken  pilots of the Pilots Guild , because Pol Pilots can  cause damage to themselves only if they fall from the top of the  tree in their drunken state - there being  nobody else with him who can suffer because of his drunkenness,  whereas our toffee nosed pilots should understand ,  in their own drunken condition they can put countless  lives  in dire jeopardy, let alone the loss to the country.

In the circumstances , it is best if these bigoted  drunken pilots without jesting and becoming jokers think sanely and sensibly to provide answers themselves to the people  to the question , whether those in the Guild are Pilots  or Pol Pilots  ?

Who says a commercial airline is an essential service? It is not. The Pilots' Guild is a registered trade union and has the right to take industrial action. They are not demanding that they should be allowed to fly in a drunken state. They are demanding that the random breath analyser tests should be conducted by trained medical officers, not security officers, and the management has now agreed to this. Please get your facts right before writing articles like this.
