(Lanka-e-News -22.June.2016, 6.05PM) The referendum campaign of the United Kingdom(UK) which attracted the attention of the world including Sri Lanka concluded yesterday night (21) .This referendum which is to be held on the 23 rd is to decide whether the UK should remain to be with the European Union or leave.
SL being a member of the commonwealth , this referendum is that important to our country, a group of representatives of the incumbent government visited UK and participated in the referendum campaign activities. That was with a view to enlighten the Sri Lankans who are there having secured citizenships.
The SL government helped the present Prime Minister of Britain David Cameron by subscribing to his view that Britain should 'remain' with the European Union (EU). Perhaps the SL government was trying to kill two birds with one stone. That is , by supporting Britain’s present P.M.’s stance , to be in the good books of the British government , and in case British government’s stance is defeated at the referendum , to still curry favor with the European Union .
Yet , at the open debate held by the BBC before 6000 viewers at the famous Wembley Hall yesterday night after the conclusion of the campaign , it seemed the majority view is in favor that Britain should 'leave' the European Union.
Based on the phone calls and e mails received at the Lanka e news office in Britain , it is evident that the Sri Lankans residing in Britain are more in favor of Britain leaving the EU. Their views have been most influenced by the migrants’ issue…
The opportunities that were available to the Sri Lankan professionals to go to Britain for employment have ebbed away like how it was before . Their chances to get their relatives to Britain have also been deprived. If Britain leaves the EU , there can be a complete change over.
In yesterday’s BBC debate it was the view of the group which advocated Britain’s leave from the EU that because Britain is with the EU , when filling vacancies , by inviting only those in the EU , the chances for talented candidates of other countries are being denied , which is wrong. One of the speakers questioned ,are there more talented candidates anywhere else to fill the vacancies in the medical sphere than the Asians? He pointed out such talents have been deprived in the present situation .
In the circumstances , irrespective of what the representatives of the government say , it is believed a majority of the Sri Lankans residing in Britain are likely to vote on the 23 rd at the referendum ,in favor of Britain leaving the EU.
