(Lanka-e-News- 05.Feb.2016, 11.30PM) The 68th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s independence day was celebrated yesterday at the Galle face green. This was the secnod independence day celebration of the victorious Rainbow revolution which successfully ousted the moribund Rajapakse regime.
As was with the Rajapakse regime the independence day was celebrated recalling the SL’s war victory over the British .However there was a significant difference in this year’s celebrations , that is the national anthem was sung in both main languages.
The celebrations which began with the singing of the national anthem in Sinhala was concluded with the national anthem in Tamil.The president a clever speaker made his speech without the assistance of any teleprompters. In conjunction with the independence day , 606 prisoners who were incarcerated on minor offences were released today under the general presidential pardon .Among those released were 13 women .Foreign Diplomats and disabled soldiers attended the independence day celebrations.The independence celebrations were also held at district levels.
