UNP and DP sign MOU : future political journey forward is under Ranil’s leadership – Field Marshal Fonseka

(Lanka-e-News -03.Feb.2016, 11.00PM) The memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the UNP and the Democratic party was signed today (03 )at the official residence of the prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe .The leaders of the two parties Ranil Wickremesinghe and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka signed the MOU. Malik Samarawickrema, UNP general secretary Kabir Hashim , Ruwan Wijewardena , Lakshman Kiriella and  Ravi Karunanayake  of the UNP and Captain Senaka ,secretary to Field Marshal Fonseka of the Democratic party were also present on the occasion.

Sarath Fonseka addressing the media briefing said , it is his hope to go a long journey forward under the political  leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe , while adding that at the last election he went on the journey alone without joining with the United National Front.

Fonseka who contested separately at the last election  had to face a crushing defeat. The party of Fonseka could poll only 5241 votes contesting the Colombo district.

Though defeated candidates of the  UNP , JVP, the Tamil National Alliance and SLMC were taken into parliament under the national list , it was the policy of the UNP that defeated candidates will not be given places in parliament through  its national list.

Yet it cannot be forgotten Sarath Fonseka is one who faced grave injustices at the hands of the brutal Rajapakses - chased away by them and was deprived of his M.P.post until the government of good governance  was installed in  power . Despite  his sufferings and even after he was put behind bars , Fonseka did not kowtow to the Rajapakses.
