(Lanka-e-News- 04.Nov.2014, 9.00PM) Who is the most suitable common candidate of the UNP who can defeat Mahinda Rajapakse ,if the Presidential post is to be vacated , can bring together most members of the party and is most popular among the people ? Is it Ranil or Karu ? The Lanka e news which stopped this opinion poll in 24 hours after commencement had the following result : 53 % voted for Karu Jayasuriya while only 47 % voted for Ranil. In any event, only as small as 10 % of the many thousands of viewers of the website voted in this opinion poll.
It is the consensus, in much the same way as a common opposition candidate cannot win without the UNP , so it is impossible for the UNP to win alone without a common alliance.
Some say , if Ranil is contesting they would not support and if Karu is contesting they would. It is the view of some that if Karu contests , the Sinhala Buddhist will vote for him , but the minorities will not .
On the other hand if Ranil contests the whole country is of the opinion he would lose. It is the opinion of some others they should support somebody who can emerge victorious , and question how can a loser be extended support ? Although various individuals of the UNP are suggesting Ranil’s name as their candidate , so far there is no official confirmation. It is in this environment of vacillating opinions we conducted this opinion poll among the people which indicated Karu Jayasuriya is suitable.
