(Lanka-e-news -21.Dec.2015, 5.10AM) It is usual after the budget is over , for the parliament to have a one month vacation , but under this government of good governance determined to serve the people , this time the holidays had been curtailed to just two weeks , and the parliament is to resume sittings on 6 th of January. The Parliament is to meet primarily as a constitutional legislative assembly on the proposal of the prime minister to table a resolution for a new constitution for the country.
The constitutional reforms cabinet sub committee has already been appointed with regard to the enactment of a new constitution pertaining to the abolition of the Executive presidency and for the devolution of the executive power to the parliament, independent commissions and the judiciary . The sub committee has decided to invite public opinion in this connection. These views are to be sought through the print and electronic media , as well as directly from the people.
A committee comprising 24 intellectuals are to be appointed by the aforementioned Cabinet sub committee, to garner opinions .This committee shall travel across the whole country in groups of three separately to meet with the public and get their opinions.
It will be the primary task of the new parliament to appoint a monitoring committee with the participation of all MPs for the monitoring by the ministries . This is a clear index that in the new year the new parliament is forging ahead on its objectives to reinforce the democratic rights of the people.
