‘If you don’t want we don’t want it absolutely ‘ –hate speech amendment abandoned as Sampanthan opposes

(Lanka-e-News- 19.Dec.2015, 6.40AM)  The amendment that was to be introduced by the government  to impose a maximum jail sentence of two years under the Penal code on those who make hate speeches against race or  religion has been postponed indefinitely without a date on the grounds ‘if you don’t want , we don’t want it absolutely  .’

This amendment was proposed by the government based on the LLRC report recommendations . However because of  the opposition mounted by notorious  racist Wimal Weerawansa , NGO teams including Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu ,and TNA citing  the grounds that this may be used against those who are expressing anti government views , it was decided that the proposal be abandoned.

A spokesman for the government speaking to Lanka e news explained …..

‘ We brought forward this amendment because this is contained in the LLRC report , and in the past among all the people there was a resentment against hate speeches . It was not the government’s aim or interest to suppress freedom of expression under any circumstance. Since Sampanthan himself is opposing this , there is no necessity for us to be the target of mudslinging . Nevertheless those who opposed this will some day realize the disaster they have courted owing to their present stance,’  he added.
