19 Tamil civilians escape from LTTE clutches
(Lanka-e-News 27.Feb.2009 1.00PM) Sri Lanka Army rescues 19 civilians from LTTE clutches. The soldiers of Sri Lanka Army 58 Division have rescued 19 more Tamil civilians from LTTE clutches in Puthukkudiyiruppu yesterday (Feb 26), Defence Ministry reveal.

According to the sources, 10 males and 9 females including several children and elderly people were among those rescued.

The civilians have told the soldiers that they were fired upon by the LTTE cadres while crossing over to the cleared areas. Four civilians including two children have sustained gun shot injuries due to the terrorist fire. According to the civilians, there were many others who wanted to seek refuge with the security forces with them, but could not make it due to the LTTE small arms fire.

The sources in the field said that the LTTE have used sniper weapons to target the civilians. Three soldiers have also suffered injuries due to LTTE fire in their attempt to rescue the civilians.
