Sunday Leader editor says moves to arrest him
(LeN-2006 Dec 28, 8.00pm) The editor of The Sunday Leader Lasantha Wickrematunge accused the government of trying to arrest him under the prevention of terrorism act.

"I have reliable information that there is move to arrest me on a story that we carried last weekend," Wickrematunge said this evening at The Sunday Leader office. He said that the CID had been asked to carry out the arrest despite the Attorney General's Department ruling that there was no basis for the arrest. The arrest was instigated by the Defence Secretary following a story on Rs 400 million bunker being built at Temple Trees.

As a contingent of media waited outside the Leader office awaiting the arrival of CID, Wickrematunge said that President Mahinda Rajapakse had set the arrest aside following instructions. However the arrest warrant had not been withdrawn. "I am ready to go to jail, I will not hide, we will face these intimidations," he said.
