| Judiciary and its independence in grave jeopardy: UNP and leader are sleep happy –people accuse |

 (Lanka-e-News -27.Oct.2012, 10.30PM) The entire civil population of SL is absolutely disgruntled and dismayed over the deplorable lackadaisical and insouciant attitude adopted by the Opposition and its leader pertaining to the devastating diabolic pressures brought to bear by the MaRa regime on the independent judiciary. Despite this being the first time in SL’s history that the Judiciary had confronted such evil and oppressive measures, the Opposition and the leader are having a deep slumber. Are they appointed as people’s representatives to enjoy all these perks , salaries and privileges only to sleep like Rip Wan Winkle ?, the people are questioning.
When the attack on the JSC Secretary was debated in Parliament , the opposition leader not only kept away from the crucial debate but also hid himself without being in Parliament thereby earning the bitter displeasure of all.
It is learnt that Sumanthiran of the TNA had obtained time allocation to speak at the debate, but because of the opposition leader’s pressures on him , he had refrained from speaking. The opposition leader , it is reported, had told Sumanthiran that the latter being a Lawyer , speaking at this debate can be unavailing .
The same opposition leader some days before this , at the SSC grounds had said, , if the Magistrate’s Association and Lawyers unions come forward like on the issue of the University academic staff (FUTA) , the opposition support shall be extended.
The present president of the Lawyers’ Association is Wijedasa Rajapakse who is a UNP M .P. The legal circles question with disdain , what is there to talk any further , when the Lawyer, U N P M P. who is fast asleep cannot be awoken by its leader to address the urgent issues of the judiciary ? The leader may be suffering from somnambulism , but that does not give cause to him to walk away sleepily from these burning problems of the country at this critical juncture when the independent judiciary is being dealt a fatal blow , those Lawyers who are concerned about the UNP leveled these charges against the leader specially and the party generally.

On the contrary , unlike the University academics Association( FUTA ), the Magistrates’ association is not one that can hold media discussions within Parliament. Hence , the legal circles who are thoroughly disappointed and disillusioned with the somnambulism afflicted Opposition leader who instead of playing a vital role and being in the vanguard championing the cause of the independent Judiciary and Democracy , is instead blabbering about and idling away precious time referring to a Latima House statement while inquiring whether the opposition can intervene directly more than this on the burning issue.
