(Lanka-e-News -25.Oct.2012, 9.30PM) The main Teachers’ Unions and the associations of the School principals, Island wide jointly staged a massive protest march on the 24th .At least 4000 members participated in this march , according to our correspondent reporting to Lanka e news. This march had to be necessarily staged by the Unions because the discussions with the Deputy Minister of education to have the salary anomalies eradicated and to win their demands proved futile.
The protest march commenced from near the Dr. N M Perera statue, Rajagiriya and headed towards the education Ministry, where the education Minister Bandula Gona wardena was holding a media briefing without facing the Teachers and Principals. The Minister Gonawardena instead of facing the largest crowd of representatives of the unions gathered in SL so far , ignored them in much the same characteristic way he ignores the burning education issues in the country thereby ruining children’s education in an unprecedented scale in the country’s education history. The representatives were not met by the Minister ,instead a Secretary of the Ministry came forward to meet a representative of the unions, and received a letter of theirs.

Josef Stalin , the Secretary of the Teachers’ Association after the massive protest march , when contacted by Lanka e news , said, their protest march was highly successful, and if the Education Minister or a Cabinet Minister does not hold discussions or give an opportunity for discussions in regard to their demands , they would enlist the 9862 Schools across the Island and stage a continuous strike jointly. |
